Nine kilometres of beach clubs, golf and quiet dunes between Estepona and San Pedro
The New Golden Mile is not a town but the eastern coast of Estepona municipality: about nine kilometres from the Río Padrón to the Marbella border at Guadalmina, built as a chain of urbanisations either side of the A-7. Its history is older than it looks. By the mouth of the Guadalmansa river stand a 14-metre watchtower, possibly 10th-century and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, and the excavated Roman villa of Las Torres; the Iberian settlement of Salduba is thought to have stood near the same river.

Daily life runs on the car. Shopping and services are spread between small commercial centres along the old N-340 (Costasol, Diana Park, Benavista) and Cancelada, the original village of the strip, which has the council's local office, the parish church, a state primary and secondary school and its own feria in late August. Around them sit hotels (Hacienda del Mar, the former Kempinski; Ikos Andalusia; Atalaya Park), four golf clubs and some of the coast's best-known beach clubs. Four private international schools within a few kilometres draw families from across Europe; Atalaya Golf alone reports members of about 36 nationalities.
The rhythm is seasonal. Most beach clubs open from Easter to late September and are at their busiest in July and August, when parking at Playa del Padrón and Laguna is very hard to find; hotel beach clubs are not tied to that season. In winter the strip is quiet, but the golf clubs and most of the restaurants listed here stay open (all were taking customers in October 2026). Cancelada's fair (20–23 August in 2026) brings free concerts, a 50-metre water slide and a free paella to the village square.
The downsides: almost nothing is walkable, the A-7 cuts the area in two, and in October 2026 residents of Bel Air and El Paraíso were petitioning over daily gridlock at the Cancelada roundabout, where Ministry of Transport rules block a two-way service road. Some of the prettiest beaches (Matas Verdes, Isdabe) are hard to reach or feel private because of hotel sunbeds. There is no train, the public hospital in Estepona has limited services, and the main private hospital (Hospiten) is on the strip itself. Estepona town and Puerto Banús are each about 13 minutes' drive away.

No public statistic breaks Estepona down to the New Golden Mile, so the figures above are municipality-wide. Within the strip, Cancelada and the older 1980s–1990s complexes around Diana Park and Benamara are the most affordable; front-line beach complexes at El Saladillo, Costalita and El Padrón, the villas of El Paraíso and Bel Air, and the low-density El Campanario area are the dearest. Several large new projects were coming to market in 2026 in Resinera and La Resina. Long-term rentals are scarce across Estepona (rents rose about 80% between 2021 and 2025).

At El Saladillo and Matas Verdes, protected dunes and stone pines separate long, quieter beaches from the urbanisations and give shade on summer days. The Senda Litoral coastal path is the easiest way to reach Matas Verdes, near Benamara and Isdabe, and in winter, when the beach clubs close, the whole strip goes quiet.
The watchtowers tell an older story. By the Guadalmansa river stands a 14-metre almenara, possibly from the 10th century and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, beside the excavated Roman villa of Las Torres; the Iberian settlement of Salduba is thought to have stood nearby. Further along, round towers rise among the Saladillo urbanisations and in the gardens at Playa del Padrón.
Beach-club scene in summer, quiet in winter
