What it is like

A white hill village, a busy town centre and a marina coast, 20 minutes from the airport

Benalmádena is three places under one town hall. Benalmádena Pueblo, the original white village, sits about 300 m up the slope of the Sierra de Mijas around a church first built in 1621 and the Plaza de España. Arroyo de la Miel grew lower down around a paper-making complex founded in 1784 and is now the everyday centre, with the Cercanías station, the Friday market and most shops. Benalmádena Costa runs along more than nine kilometres of beaches and coves, with Puerto Marina, a marina of over 1,100 berths, near its eastern end. The municipality had 13,622 residents in 1981 and 78,787 in 2025.

A white village, a busy town and a marina coast, with the gold spire of a stupa looking down on all three.

It is one of the most international towns on the coast: in the 2025 register 23,035 residents (29%) held a foreign passport and 29,718 (38%) were born abroad. Families from abroad choose between The British College in Torremuelle, the Benalmádena International College and the IB school Colegio Internacional Torrequebrada; Spanish families concentrate in Arroyo de la Miel; retirees and second-home owners fill the urbanisations around Torrequebrada, Torremuelle and the village. Arroyo and the seafront promenade are easy without a car, and trains run about every 20 minutes to the airport and Málaga, but the estates above the A-7 are steep and most errands there need a car.

Summer changes the coast far more than the village. From the Feria de San Juan in Arroyo de la Miel (24–29 June in 2026) until September, Plaza Solymar and Puerto Marina stay busy late and the beaches fill; between the Sunset Beach hotel and Carvajal a lane of the coast road is kept for parking. In winter the town feels residential: some beach restaurants close (El Parador Playa opens March to October), the Teleférico can shut for wind or maintenance, and the big dates are the Friday market, Carnival in February and El Paso, the Holy Week passion play staged in the Parque Rústico El Retamar.

The honest downsides. The large Tívoli World site beside Arroyo de la Miel station has been closed since 2020; its owners filed plans in October 2025 for a rebuilt park with two hotels and a shopping centre, but in April 2026 there was still no confirmation that works had started, and 2028 is a best-case reopening. Plaza Solymar and Puerto Marina are loud on summer nights, and many studios around Parque de la Paloma are holiday lets. Prices have also run ahead of Málaga city: the Ministry of Housing's appraisal average was €3,783/m² in Q2 2026, up 12.8% in a year, against €3,321/m² in Málaga.

Out of five, against the rest of the coast.
Character
  • Beach

More than 9 km of sand beaches and small coves; Blue Flags at Fuente de la Salud and Carvajal (2025) plus Torrebermeja–Santa Ana (2026).

  • Golf

One 18-hole course (Torrequebrada, 1976) plus two pitch-and-putt courses; most of the coast's big courses are 20–40 minutes away.

  • Nightlife

Plaza Solymar and Puerto Marina keep going late all summer; the crowd is mostly holidaymakers and young locals.

  • Families

Selwo Marina, Sea Life, the cable car, Parque de la Paloma, calm coves and three international schools.

  • Peace and quiet

The village, Torremuelle and La Capellanía are quiet; Solymar, Puerto Marina and the seafront are noisy in summer.

  • On foot

Arroyo de la Miel and the promenade are flat and walkable with two train stations; the hillside estates are car-dependent.

  • Value

Appraisals average €3,783/m² (Q2 2026), above Málaga city; studios from about €140k and older Arroyo flats keep entry prices within reach.

  • International

29% of residents are foreign nationals and 38% were born abroad (2025 register).

Unexpected landmarks

Stupa, Columbus castle and cable car

Above its beaches, Benalmádena has a Buddhist stupa, a castle built for Columbus and a cable car to the summit.

On the hill above the town stands the largest Buddhist stupa in the Western world, 33 metres tall and opened on 5 October 2003; entry is free and visitors can join guided meditations inside. Beside it, more than 1,500 tropical butterflies fly free in a Thai-style temple, and below the village rises Castillo de Colomares, a fantasy castle built from 1987 to 1994 as a homage to Columbus.

From Arroyo de la Miel, the Teleférico climbs in 15 minutes to the top of Monte Calamorro at about 770 metres, with walking trails and a birds-of-prey display at the summit. Down on the seafront, the neo-Arab Castillo El Bil Bil, designed by Enrique Atencia in the 1930s, is now a year-round venue for exhibitions and concerts a few metres from the beach.
